School classifications
Category rankings match schools by URN to the official GIAS school register, snapshot 2026-10-18. Register classifications describe this snapshot, not necessarily the exam year. State, grammar and independent rankings explain their inclusion rules.

How school groups are assigned
Classification uses three separate register fields: school sector, education phase and the main-intake admissions policy. Standalone post-16 providers are identified by the 16 plus phase or an official post-16 establishment type and excluded from the State Schools secondary list. That list requires a mainstream Secondary or All-through school with an explicit Non-selective policy. Unknown and not-applicable policies do not qualify. No school names, URN exception lists or inferred entrance tests are used.
The GIAS admissions field does not establish standalone post-16 entry requirements or distinguish every form of partial selection within a secondary school. Non-Selective is the register’s main-intake label, not a claim that every school or sixth-form place is academically unselected. Independent schools retain this site’s separate Selective display convention.
